2017 CEO Outlook
Four industry CEOs discuss their views of the industry's future
Thursday, April 6, 2017, 6:30pm - 8:45pm, at Synopsys, Mountain View, California

At this important event, the CEOs of four leading ESD Alliance member companies discussed their views of where our industry - the semiconductor design ecosystem - is heading.

The distinguished panel discused major new trends they see, with the potential opportunities they see ahead. Panelists for the evening were Aart de Geus (Synopsys), Lip-Bu Tan (Cadence), Wally Rhines (Mentor) and Simon Segars (ARM). Ed Sperling (Semiconductor Engineering) moderated the panel. Each CEO presented a brief opening statement about the future of the industry, followed by an interactive, moderated audience discussion. 

Attendees also had the opportunity to network with the CEOs and others at a reception prior to the panel session.

The event was held on Thursday evening, April 6, 2017, at Synopsys in Mountain View, California.

CEO Outlook Moderator:

Ed Sperling Ed Sperling, Editor-in-Chief, Semiconductor Engineering (Moderator)

Ed is the editor in chief of Semiconductor Engineering. He is a technology industry veteran, frequent moderator and speaker in Silicon Valley. Sperling is a former contributing editor at Forbes, where he wrote nearly 200 articles about business and technology issues affecting IT and CIOs. He was previously editor in chief of Electronic News and Electronic Business, and before that he held top editorial positions at Ziff-Davis and CMP Publications. Prior to that he was a daily newspaper investigative reporter covering crime and corruption.

Aart de Geus Aart de Geus, Co-CEO, Synopsys

Since co-founding Synopsys in 1986, Dr. de Geus has expanded Synopsys from a start-up synthesis company to a global high-tech leader. Dr. de Geus has long been considered one of the world's leading experts on logic synthesis and simulation, and frequently keynotes major conferences in Electronics and Design Automation. Dr. de Geus has been widely recognized for his technical, business and community achievements with multiple awards, including Electronic Business Magazine's "CEO of the Year," the IEEE Robert N. Noyce Medal, the GSA Morris Chang Exemplary Leadership Award, the Silicon Valley Engineering Council Hall of Fame Award, and the SVLG Lifetime Achievement Award. He serves on the Boards of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, Applied Materials, the Global Semiconductor Alliance, and the Electronic System Design Alliance.

Lip-Bu Tan Lip-Bu Tan, President and CEO, Cadence Design Systems

Lip-Bu Tan has served as President and CEO of Cadence Design Systems, Inc. since January 2009 and has been a member of the Cadence Board of Directors since February 2004. He also serves as chairman of Walden International, a venture capital firm he founded in 1987. Prior to founding Walden, Tan was Vice President at Chappell & Co. and held management positions at EDS Nuclear and ECHO Energy.

He is Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Electronic System Design Alliance (ESD Alliance) and serves on the board of Global Semiconductor Association (GSA), as well as the boards of Ambarella Inc., Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co., and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. He also serves on the Board of Trustees and the School of Engineering Dean’s Council at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Tan is the recipient of the 2016 GSA Morris Chang's Exemplary Leadership Award.

Tan received an M.S. in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MBA from the University of San Francisco, and a B.S. from Nanyang University in Singapore.

Wally Rhines Walden C. Rhines, Chairman and CEO, Mentor Graphics Corp.

WALDEN C. RHINES is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Mentor Graphics, a leader in worldwide electronic design automation with revenue of $1.2 billion in the company’s last fiscal year. During his tenure at Mentor Graphics, revenue has nearly quadrupled, enterprise value has increased by 8X and Mentor has grown the industry’s number one market share solutions in four of the ten largest product segments of the EDA industry. At Mentor Graphics, he has built leading industry positions in areas outside of traditional EDA, including system design, embedded software, automotive and hardware emulation. This has led to innovation and growth of the entire EDA industry.

Dr. Rhines received the 2015 Phil Kaufman Award for Distinguished Contributions to EDA, presented by the ESD Alliance and the IEEE Council on EDA (CEDA).

Rhines has served five terms as Chairman of ESDA and is currently serving as a director. He is also a board member of the Semiconductor Research Corporation and First Growth Family & Children Charities. He has previously served as chairman of the Semiconductor Technical Advisory Committee of the Department of Commerce and as a board member of the Computer and Business Equipment Manufacturers' Association (CBEMA), SEMI-Sematech/SISA, University of Michigan National Advisory Council, Lewis and Clark College and SEMATECH.

Dr. Rhines holds a Bachelor of Science degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Michigan, a Master of Science and Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Stanford University, a master of business administration from Southern Methodist University and Honorary Doctor of Technology degrees from Nottingham Trent University and the University of Florida.

Simon Segars Simon Segars, CEO, ARM

Simon Segars has been at the heart of transformational change in the technology industry for 25 years. He led the development of early ARM processors for the world’s first digital mobile phones and now spearheads ARM’s vision for smart and connected technologies that create better social, economic, education and health prospects for all. Before being appointed CEO in July 2013, Simon held several leadership positions within ARM’s engineering and business development teams. He lives in California’s Silicon Valley, but spends much of his time meeting leading influencers in the world’s technology hubs in the US, Europe and China.

Simon serves on the Boards of the Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA), the Electronic System Design Alliance, and as a non-executive director at Dolby Laboratories, Inc.

He holds a number of embedded CPU architecture patents and earned his BEng in electronic engineering from the University of Sussex as well as an MSc in computer science from the University of Manchester.
