1999 Phil Kaufman Award Recipient

San Jose, Calif., USA – November 1, 1999 – The EDA Consortium announced today that the recipient of this year’s Phil Kaufman Award is Hugo De Man, a professor at Katholieke Universiteit (Leuven, Belgium) and a senior research fellow at the Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre (IMEC) (Leuven, Belgium).

The Award honors De Man for his contributions in creating and driving technology advances that have had measurable impact on the productivity of electronic design engineers. The Award is being presented at the Consortium’s 1999 Phil Kaufman award dinner on November 11th at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose.

“The Phil Kaufman award honors individuals who have made a substantial and sustainable contribution to the success of the EDA industry,” commented Dr. Aart de Geus, chairman of the EDA Consortium and chairman and CEO of Synopsys, Inc. “Hugo De Man is clearly one of these individuals. Over the years, he has not only made great contributions to the design of microelectronic circuits and systems, but has successfully enabled the transfer of this technology to many commercial endeavors throughout the world. Hugo’s career parallels the history of EDA; EDA’s evolution is unthinkable without his contributions.”

Richard Newton, a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California (Berkeley, CA) and a member of the EDA Consortium’s Phil Kaufman award nominating committee, stated, “Hugo De Man has not only contributed to many aspects of design technology, but also in the application of these techniques to circuit design and system design. He and his students have made many fundamental contributions in CAD, from some of the earliest mixed-level circuit simulation work to system-level synthesis and verification, and he has always coupled this work with an equally important contribution in the application of the tools to a circuit or system design problem. The early NORA race-free dynamic logic work and the more recent work concerning the effect of memory architectures on processor performance are two examples of many in this regard. “Bridging the gap between system design and silicon implementation has been the focus of Hugo De Man’s career,” added Ivo Bolsens, a vice-president at IMEC. “His work using Cathedral’s silicon compilation technology for synthesis of DSP circuits has resulted in many commercial EDA products, including Mentor’s DSP station, and the founding of several companies. Today, his work on C++-based system design and hardware/software co-design has helped move EDA up to a higher level of abstraction.”

About Phil Kaufman
Phil Kaufman died July 17, 1992 during a business trip in Japan. He spent more than a quarter-of-a-century in the computer industry and was an active EDA Consortium member. His experience encompassed hardware, software, semiconductors, EDA and computer architecture. He was CEO of Quickturn Systems, now known as Quickturn Design Systems and a part of Cadence, and accelerated the use of emulation, a new design automation technology for fast IC development. In addition Mr. Kaufman was chairman and president of Silicon Compiler Systems where he was instrumental in advancing the concept of silicon compilation.

Prior to joining the EDA industry Mr. Kaufman was a manager in Intel’s microprocessor component group. He was the driving force behind the IEEE Ethernet Standard, and was instrumental in developing the IEEE Floating-Point Standard. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Michigan, he held several patents and began his career in EDA at Computer Automation, Inc.
