On Wednesday evening, May 6, 2015, EDAC held the spring 2015 installment of the very popular EDAC – Jim Hogan Emerging Companies Series, exploring concepts and best practices for emerging companies. This installment featured a conversation with Ravi Subramanian, former President and CEO of Berkeley Design Automation, on “Crossing the Chasm: From Technology to Valuable Enterprise”. (Berkeley DA was recently acquired by Mentor Graphics, a Siemens business.)
Jim and Ravi explored his philosophies and experiences on building two valuable and successful companies – one fabless semiconductor company and one EDA company.
Ravi Subramanian is currently the General Manager of the Analog Mixed-Signal Business Unit of Mentor Graphicsa Siemens business. Before joining Mentor Graphics through the acquisition of Berkeley Design Automation, Inc., Ravi led BDA to become the recognized leader in the verification of nanometer electronic integrated circuits (ICs). Every year from 2011-2013, BDA was selected to the Deloitte Fast 500 – recognizing the 500 fastest growing technology, media, telecom, and life-sciences companies in North America based on revenue growth. When BDA was acquired by Mentor Graphics, it came over with 120 customers worldwide.
With over 20 years of experience in the semiconductor, wireless communications, and electronic design industries, Ravi is a respected wireless communications and semiconductor technologist as well as an entrepreneur. Prior to joining BDA, Ravi was VP-GM of the WCDMA business group of in the Secure Mobile Solutions Division of Infineon Technologies. Ravi assumed this role via Infineon’s acquisition of Morphics Technology, a fabless semiconductor company developing multi-protocol WCDMA 3G wireless communications SoCs that Ravi co-founded and then led as CEO. As a Director at Synopsys, Ravi held product marketing and business line responsibilities spanning Digital Communications and DSP Tools and Silicon IP Solutions. Before that, Ravi led the Wireless Communications Research Department at AT&T Bell Laboratories, where he was a key member of the team that developed the world’s first GSM merchant chipset (RF transceiver, mixed-signal AFE, and baseband processor), for which he won the AT&T Leadership Award.
Ravi has a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from University of California Berkeley, where he was a recipient of the prestigious UC Regent’s Fellowship. Ravi received his BSEE (with honors) from the California Institute of Technology.
Ravi is the lead author on 17 issued United States patents in analog and digital signal processing techniques in wireless communications. Ravi has been named on the Rutberg & Company’s Wireless Influencers list every year from 2006 to 2014. This list cites the 200 people with the greatest influence on the wireless industry.
